RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence Preparation courses are taught on a 3:1 basis, that means 3 participants and 1 Instructor.

Minimum Age | 17 Years old for the Training, 17 years old for the Exam. |
Exam | We arrange the Exam, we assist in completeing the paperwork and you pay the RYA. Currently the Exam fee is £208.00 which can be subject to an annual increase. As from 1st January 2025 the Exam fee raises to £221.00. Statement from the RYA "We understand that any increase in fees can raise questions and in view of this please note that any exam vouchers bought, prior to the fee increase, will be honoured for a period of 12 weeks after 1st January 2025". It is essential that candidates for the Exam have fully checked out and understood the Pre -requisites available from the RYA. |
Clothing | Please bring suitable warm clothing to wear (under our free to use Musto GORE-TEX MPX waterproofs) also a hat, gloves, sun screen, and appropriate wellies / shoes - that may get wet, all appropriate for the time of year. |
Lifejackets | We will provide Lifejackets. If you would like to wear your own Lifejacket please ensure that its serviceability is in date and is fitted with a light. |

Course Information
A hands on driving and navigating course for day and night.
The Southampton Rivers Test and Itchen along with Southampton Water and the River Hamble, and we haven't even got to the Solent yet, provide a superb location for learning and practicing different forms of navigation.
Only 3 to a course allows you all to take turns at navigating, driving, and reviewing, in the moment.
Using our Coded Twin engine RIB, it has Shock Mitigation seats, 12 inch and 9 inch Touchscreen Chartplotters, Power Steering, and RADAR with MARPA.
Passage Planning and Pilotage, interpretation of Navigation at different speeds, along with IRPCS, using all available means will be the main feature topped up with the remaining parts of the RYA Advanced Powerboat course syllabus.

Navigation Development.
Building on the skills learned from the RYA Advanced Powerboat Course there will be sessions on improving navigation skills ashore, afloat, day and night, completing day and night time passages taking in all aspects of the RYA Advanced Powerboat course.
The Rivers - Itchen, Test, Hamble, Medina, Southampton Water and the Solent hold a vast amount of learning opportunities to work on navigation and boat handling.
Constant debriefs on learning development.

Electronic Chart Passage Planning and
Pilotage
Using the Garmin 'ActiveCaptain' App which is installed on our classroom Apple ipads, learn how to construct a Waypoint Passage Plan in the classroom on the iPad then take it to the the Powerboat and transfer the Passage Plan wirelessly direct to both of the Chartplotters on the Powerboat, the iPad is now no longer needed.
RADAR Operation.
Hands on with the Garmin Fantom RADAR to practice EBL, VRM, and MARPA functions, interpret between other vessels, fixed objects and whether the vessels are coming towards you or heading away from you.
RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence Exam Pre-requisites.

Minimum seatime;
Documented minimum sea time completed on a seagoing powerboat in the last 10 years.
30 Days at sea, which may be reduced to 20 days at sea if an RYA Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate is held;
2 Days as skipper;
800 Miles, which may be reduced to 400 miles if an RYA Advanced Powerboat Course completion certificate is held;
12 Night hours.
Background knowledge;
Knowledge to the level of Yachtmaster Offshore theory.
A GMDSS compliant Marine Radio Operator's Certificate such as the RYA SRC VHF Radio Certificate.
A RYA First Aid Certificate or another valid first aid certificate to the level of RYA First Aid.
Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate ONLY IF claiming reduced sea time detailed above.
Photographic ID card or document, such as passport or driving license.
